2001 Proposals

In 2001, the BRDC and Octagon announced plans to redevelop the circuit using the above design from Hermann Tilke. The plan was to add banking to Club Corner, and add a new infield section, moving the pit complex. It wasn't built.

2006 Proposals

As part of an alternative plan to develop Silverstone announced in April 2006, plans were announced to build a half mile oval with 12 degree banking on the site of the Rally Super Special, and to extend the Stowe circuit from 0.796 miles to 1.25 miles. Both plans are shown below. Neither of these came into being.

The 2009/2010 changes

After losing the Formula 1 event to Donington Park for 2010, Silverstone signed up to host Moto GP instead, which had previously been held at Donington. In order to do this circuit changes had to be made, and the following circuit variant was proposed.

However, once Donington Park Ventures Ltd went into administration and the chance to hold the 2010 F1 GP again arose, a further variant known as the Arena Circuit was proposed. This variant was 3.615 miles/5.89 km long, and is shown below.

In November 2009 plans were also announced to extend the Stowe circuit to 1.15 miles, but allowing six different configurations to be used. These changes meant that the circuit could be used for race meetings rather than just the race school, and that three separately sanctioned events could be held at the same time on the Southern, Club and Stowe circuits. These changes to Stowe meant that the International Circuit variant disappeared. The new Stowe circuit is shown below.

In addition to this, plans for an extended National circuit were also announced. Taking in parts of the Becketts complex, these changes would increase the circuit length to 2.00 miles/3.257 km, and are shown below.
