Phoenix - A Brief History

Recognized as the world's fastest one-mile oval, Phoenix International first opened its gates in 1964 and since that time has earned an enviable reputation as the "Jewel of the Desert." Celebrating its 30th anniversary season in 1994, Phoenix International Raceway today boasts one of motorsports' most varied schedules. Three times annually, the fast Phoenix Mile plays host to circle track racing that features the prestigious NASCAR Winston Cup Series, the wildly unpredictable Skoal Bandit Racing Copper World Classic and the super-quick PPG IndyCar World Series. More recently, Phoenix International Raceway has added a 1.51-mile road course that has resulted in the addition of the IMSA Exxon World Sports Car Championship and the AMA National Road Racing Championship for motorcycles. Since the track's opening 30 years ago, history and tradition have fired on all cylinders, as Phoenix International Raceway has been the stage upon which the world's greatest speed merchants have played out their special acts. Count AJ. Foyt, Mario and Michael Andretti, Bobby and Davey Allison, Richard Petty, Cale Yarborough, Bobby and Al Unser and Parnelli and PJ.Jones among the track's long list of winners. Add to the track's noted history and tradition its inspiring setting at the base of the rugged Estrella Mountains, hard by the Salt and Gila Rivers. Add the track's proximity to such natural wonders as the Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, Canyon de Chelly and the beautiful Red Rock country of nearby Sedona. The resulting combination is unbeatable and has been at work 30 years to attract the globe's fastest racers and most enthusiastic fans from around the world to a facility and a schedule that are forever on the grow and are unquestionably user-friendly.
