Des Moines Speedway

Des Moines Speedway was a mile board oval built in 1915. Constructed from 2 inch x 4 inch timbers laid on edge at a cost of $90,000, it had straights angled at 10 degrees and turns at 40 degrees. It held a 300 mile race in 1915, and a number of smaller events in 1916 before it was closed down that year. The company which owned the speedway was sued in 1917, and the track was dismantled and the wood sold on to people in Iowa to satisfy the creditors.
