Charlotte History

When it opened June 1960, the 1.5 mile Charlotte Motor Speedway became the third superspeedway to join NASCAR's circuit. Its inaugural event, the World 600, was moved from May to June due to construction and weather delays, but was and yet is - at 600 miles - the longest race of the season. That fall the track hosted the first National 400, since lengthened to 500 miles and now known as the Mello Yello 500.

Like many tracks, this one had to survive early financial troubles but has emerged as one of the tour's primary showplaces. In addition to the Coca-Cola 600 and the Mello Yello 500, the track plays host to 300 mile Busch Series races on the Saturday prior to the Winston Cup races and has been the site of "The Winston" all star race all but one time since its inception.

The track also holds major Collector Car Shows and swap meets in the spring and fall. Facilities at the track are open year round and feature guided tours, a complete gift shop, residential condominiums overlooking the track, and the Speedway Club restaurant atop its corporate office tower on US 29,12 miles north of Charlotte. Located at the hub of stock car racing in the Piedmont section of North Carolina, the track is close to many of the race team shops which also welcome visitors.
