A deal was announced in October 2010 to hold the Russian Grand Prix at a new 3.417 mile/5.5 km track around the 2014 Winter Olympic village, in a deal signing attended by Prime Minister Putin and Bernie Ecclestone. Around 2.5 km of the circuit was to be built as a permanent circuit, suitable for hosting national races, with the remaining 3 km using public roads. The circuit was designed by Hermann Tilke.
