Hillclimbs in Africa


Brackenhurst, Kenya

The hillclimb took place in from 1959 through to 1963 on the back road leading to Brackenhurst Hotel, Limuru. Limuru was about 20 miles northwest of Nairobi. The road was dirt until the early sixties when it was tarmacked. In 1965 or so the hotel closed and was bought by an american missionary organisation. The venue was lost to motor sport.

Bouzaréa, Algeria

Located in a suburb of Algiers, used 6 Dec 1936, and also 1959/60.

Chikuribi, Zimbabwe

A 600 yard hillclimb used from 1952 to at least 1957.


Knysna, South Africa

First used on the 31st October 2009 over a 1.85 km course (shown above). A second event was held over a 2 km course in 2010. The track uses a section of public road running up to the Simola Estate and Golf Course.


Lukenya, Kenya

With the demise of Brackenhurst, an alternative venue was found in the Lukenya Hills to the south west of Nairobi. The event was still called the Brackenhurst hillclimb.

Menengai, Kenya

Menengai Crater lies to the north of Nakuru and dominates the town. A Menengai Hillclimb appeared in the REAA (Royal East African Automobile Association) motor sport calender in the late fifties.


Polana

The Rampa da Polana is located in Lourenco Marques, Mozambique, and was used circa 1975.
